Substitute Teacher Accused of Sexual Relationship with Student Turns Self In

A former substitute teacher in Denton accused of having a sexual relationship with a student turned himself in to police on Thursday.

Police say Spencer Colt Newton started working at Ryan High School in January and used Snapchat to message a 17-year-old female student. Both Newman and the student admitted to having a sexual relationship with one another.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, several school employees came forward to police to give information about the relationship to police. One teacher saw the girl get in Newton's truck in the school parking lot.

The girl told police Newton messaged her to come to one of the school's portable buildings in May. He asked her to perform oral sex, and she says she declined because she was at school and didn't want to get caught.

Police say the girl then told Associate Principal Donald Peden about the incident. Peden contacted Newton and Principal Vernon Reeves about the relationship and Newton resigned. Newton said he did not want to return to school and had found work with his father elsewhere.

Newton is in the Denton City Jail waiting to be arraigned on a charge of improper relationship between educator and student, which is second degree felony.
