Storm Damages Homes in Wise County Neighborhood

Severe storms caused serious damage in Wise County Thursday, and New Fairview saw a large amount of destruction from a possible tornado.

Cristina Chandler, who lives on county County Road 4421, said she saw a tornado on the ground..

"There were no loud noises," said Chandler, "Just wind, a lot of wind. Never heard the train sound that most people tell you. It just came up out of nowhere pretty quick."

Greg and Nannette Pickinpaugh also live on County Road 442. They had just left their mobile home of 25 years to seek shelter when they got a call from their neighbor.

"She told me oh my gosh I am so glad you are safe," said Nannette Pickinpaugh, "Your home is gone. The house is off its foundation. It's gone."

Along with their mobile home being destroyed, their car was totaled, several sheds damaged, and an RV was ripped apart.

"I am going to get a storage and a U-Haul and salvage what we can and see what happens after that," said Nannette Pickinpaugh. "The insurance company has been called."

Neighborhood residents said they're just glad no one was hurt.

"We can fix all the stuff behind us," said Greg Pickinpaugh.

County Road 4421 was closed after the storm, but was soon reopened after all the debris was picked up.

"We will all pull through this," said Chandler. "The community came together and helped out a lot last night."
