Southlake Halts Gas Drilling for 6 Months

A North Texas city has imposed a six month moratorium on new natural gas drilling and pipeline applications.

Southlake leaders are considering revising the drilling ordinance. Some say the Fort Worth suburb needs stricter rules to protect air and water quality and reduce drilling noise.

The Southlake City Council's vote Tuesday doubled the proposed three-month drilling moratorium, but it doesn't affect XTO Energy's two pending drilling requests.

On Thursday, the Southlake Planning and Zoning Commission was to discuss XTO Energy's request to drill up to 27 wells on one resident's property. A vote has been postponed until next month.

XTO's request to drill up to 18 wells has been tabled three times, once by the zoning commission and twice by the Southlake City Council.
