Snyder Man Gets 99 Years for Killing Daughter, 26

A West Texas man is sentenced to 99 years in prison for the 2012 fatal shooting of his daughter as she tried to protect her wounded mother.

A Scurry County jury on Friday ordered the maximum penalty for 54-year-old James Robert Smith of Snyder over the deadly domestic incident.

Jurors in Snyder earlier convicted Smith of murder in the October 2012 shooting death of his daughter, 26-year-old Mattie Smith, at the family's home.

James Smith still faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon over the wounding of his wife, 56-year-old Jeannie Smith, during an argument. Officials say she was shot four times but survived.

Authorities say the daughter was fatally shot as she tried to help her injured mother.
