Small Fire Reported on Patient Floor at Baylor Hospital

A small fire was extinguished Friday afternoon on a patient floor at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, according to a statement from the hospital.

No injuries were reported in the fire, which began at about 4:16 p.m. with some sort of battery explosion on the seventh floor, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue officials.

A second alarm was called to help evacuate patients from that part of the hospital and to help ventilate the smoke.

The cause was later determined to be an electrical malfunction in a battery back-up unit, and damage was contained to the room where it started, including damage to the wall and overhead cabinets, fire officials said.

The hospital released the following statement, in full:

"This afternoon at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, a small fire was quickly extinguished in one section of a patient floor. There were no patients in the immediate area. However, as a safety precaution, hospital staff temporarily moved nearby patients to another area of the same floor. There were no injuries. Our staff regularly conduct drills for these types of events. We continue to work with Dallas Fire and Rescue to determine the cause. The safety of our patients and their families is one of our top priorities."
