Shooting Victim Found Inside Car Near Elementary School

Man believed to have shot self inside vehicle

Denton County deputies are investigating a shooting near Cross Oaks Elementary School on Liberty Boulevard Monday morning.

Officers from nearby Oak Point were called to the school after a deceased individual was found inside a car along Tumbleweed Drive.  Initial reports from the Oak Point Police Department said the man's body was found in a car in a public parking lot, which was not the case.

Officials said the victim had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting is believed to have taken place late Sunday night or early Monday morning and the victim was in the car, next to the school all morning as parents dropped off their children for school.

Someone eventually noticed the man and called the authorities, police said.

The school has been placed on lockdown for security purposes,  mainly so that children are kept away from the scene until the remains and car are removed. The school is open and classes are expected to continue through the day.

NBC 5 has crews at the scene and we'll update this story with more information as soon as it's available.  As this story is developing, elements may change.
