Several Hurt as Race Start Line Structure Collapses in Texas

Several runners have been hurt when part of a metal structure at the starting line collapsed before a marathon in South Texas.

The city of Brownsville says in a statement the accident happened Saturday morning just before the Bi-National 10K & 5K Run. Officials did not immediately say how many people were hurt. Some were taken by ambulance to hospitals for evaluation.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused the collapse. The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for Saturday morning through early evening.

Interim City Manager Michael L. Lopez says no additional information will be released because of the investigation and to respect the privacy of those involved.

The race was held as scheduled following the accident.
