Service Held on Anniversary of Dallas Firefighter's Death

A Dallas firefighter who died helping a stranded motorist was honored by his fellow firefighters on the anniversary of his death.

William Scott Tanksley was killed after a car struck him during a February ice storm. He was thrown off an overpass.

A special service was held at Fire Station 12 Tuesday to remember his sacrifice. Joe Veracruz, who worked with Tanksley for 15 years, organized the event to celebrate Taksley's legacy.

"We want to recognize his family and celebrate with them the legacy," Veracruz said. "It's very important not only to us as a family, but also to the department and public safety workers everywhere."

Tanksley's wife and three children attended the event. Firefighters prepared photos and a silver ax to always be displayed in the fire station to honor Tanksley, who was 40-years-old when he died.
