Law enforcement officers from across Texas have turned out to mourn a police chief who was fatally shot while working off-duty security at a Temple bar.
Marlin police Chief Darrell Allen was remembered Saturday during a service at the Marlin High School auditorium.
Family and friends of Allen joined uniformed officers to mourn the chief, who was shot Nov. 1 while trying to detain a man. Allen died Tuesday at a hospital.
Derrick Wayne Gamble was being held Saturday on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with bond set at $1.75 million.
A candlelight vigil was held Friday night in downtown Marlin to remember Allen, who was police chief since 2009.
Marlin is a town of about 6,000, located 30 miles northeast of Temple.
