Exactly 1205 days after they nearly lost everything, Denton’s Selwyn College Preparatory School is ready to rebuild.
On Friday school leaders, students, and alumni broke ground on a new main building at their campus along Highway 380 in west Denton.
The original building on the site burned to the ground in the early morning hours of January 26, 2012. The fire was determined an arson but to this date remains unsolved.
For a school like Selwyn, rebuilding from the blaze was a particularly difficult task. As a completely private school they receive no state or government funding or, in this case, no assistance.
The school had to rely on private donations, fundraisers, and loans to rebuild.
After delays along the way and a lot of work, they finally have the funds and are moving forward with site plans that they hope to complete by the end of the year.
"We're looking forward to moving forward and putting the fire and devastation behind us," said Selwyn Head of School Karen Morris.
