Two adults and nine children were injured Friday at about 1:50 p.m. after one school bus rear-ended another school bus in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Dallas.
Investigators said after a car slowed down on the interstate, the first bus slowed down, and the second bus ran into the first one at Royal Lane.
About 85 fourth-grade students from T.J. Lee Elementary School in Irving were returning from a field trip at the Lake Lewisville Environmental Learning Area when the crash happened.
Two school bus drivers were taken to the hospital. One of the drivers was taken to Parkland Hospital with a broken leg. Nine students were taken to Children's Medical Center as a precaution for minor bumps and bruises. One of the children was transported due to complications with asthma. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
All the children that were taken to the hospital were evaluated and scheduled to be released Friday. The conditions of the two adult drivers are unknown.
Another bus was called to take the remaining children back to school.
The wreck shut down two southbound lanes and backed up traffic to Interstate 635.
