School Canceled All Week Following Deadly Van Tornado

School has been canceled all week in an East Texas town recovering from a tornado that claimed two lives and injured more than 40 people.

The Van Independent School District reported Wednesday that all five schools are closed amid cleanup efforts.

Sunday night's tornado in Van, located about 70 miles southeast of Dallas, killed retired Garland police Lt. David Tapley and his wife, Brenda, and left about 120 homes damaged or destroyed. Two schools are among the structures with significant damage.

Van Zandt County emergency management coordinator Chuck Allen said Tuesday that the storm system caused millions of dollars in damage.

Gov. Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for the county, clearing the way for additional government assistance.
