SWA Flight Diverted to OKC

Flight from Newark to Phoenix diverted

A Southwest Airlines flight from Newark to Phoenix was diverted to Oklahoma City after the pilot reported fumes inside the aircraft's cockpit.

Airline spokesman Chris Mainz says flight 2838 carrying 40 passengers and five crew landed safely at Will Rogers World Airport Thursday morning and that no one on board was injured.

Mainz says the aircraft was taken out of service and that the passengers will be placed on different flights.

Airport spokeswoman Karen Carney said earlier that the diverted aircraft was flight 2805 from St. Louis and that it had resumed its journey after being cleared by inspectors. Carney later said a misunderstanding led to the discrepancy and that the information from Southwest is correct.

Mainz said the airline did not yet know the source of the fumes.
