SMU Disciplines Frat After Watermelon Bash Fundraiser

A Southern Methodist University fraternity has been disciplined after a charity fundraiser got a little wild, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Lambda Chi Alpha is on deferred suspension after university officials said it caused damage to Burleson Park where it hosted its Watermelon Bash on Sept. 19. The event was advertised as a fundraiser for the North Texas Food Bank.

One neighbor complained about someone urinating in her yard and another person complained about the noise, University Park police told the paper.

Trash and damage to a university fountain was left in the wake of the event, said Lori White, SMU's vice president of student affairs.

White told the paper that the fraternity cannot host or participate in any social activities as it remains on deferred suspension until the end of the year.

SMU has ordered the fraternity to pay University Park $1,200 in restitution for damages to Burleson Park, and to pay $275 for damage to the fountain.

The fraternity also has to undertake a community service project.
