Restoration to Start Soon On Governor's Mansion

State officials say they are almost finished stabilizing the fire-damaged Texas Governor's Mansion and hope to start restoration efforts early next year.

State Preservation Board officials on Wednesday took reporters through portions of the historic home, which was nearly destroyed by a June 8 blaze authorities say was started by an arsonist.

Because the fire and efforts to put it out destroyed the roof and damaged several walls, workers had to build floor-to-ceiling supports throughout the mansion to make it safe.

Officials expect to save most of the mansion, including the majestic columns in front that were badly charred by the blaze.
