Uptown Shooting Victim's Family Demands Justice

As police reveal a major break in the investigation, the family of 35-year-old murder victim Kendra Hatcher say they have many questions about her death.

"I feel like I'm stuck in limbo because I don't feel there's any kind of end until I know who did this," said Lisa Sato, Hatcher's aunt who spoke to NBC News from her home in Arizona.

According to police, 23-year-old Crystal Cortez was arrested and charged with capital murder. Cortez's brother found her alleged involvement difficult to believe.

"I broke down in tears. I really broke down in tears, because me knowing my sister, she's not capable of doing something like that," said Jorge Cortez, Crystal's brother.

Cortez told detectives she was paid $500 to drive a man to that parking garage for a robbery. She also said the man she drove is the shooter, according to the affidavit.

Despite the allegations, Cortez stood firm in defending his sister saying there was no way she could have pulled the trigger.

Police have not released the man's name or said whether he is in custody.

"I really can't say the things that I'm thinking about her ... she's gone, some evil in her, even if she did think it was going to be a robbery," said Lisa Sato, Hatcher's aunt.

Sato believes there is more to the story.

"I don't believe this is robbery. Robbers don't walk up and shoot somebody first and then grab their stuff. It's just not the way robberies happen," Sato said.

Hatcher, described by family and friends as a well-respected pediatric dentist who was good with kids and spoke Spanish, was planning a move to San Francisco.

"They all had great education and everything was good for them. It's unfathomable that she could be the one, it just doesn't make any sense to us," said Sato.

"Nothing in her life would make us believe something like this would happen."
