Red Oak Teen Held in Father's Slaying

A 15-year-old boy has been detained in connection with the shooting death of his 57-year-old father at the home they shared in Red Oak.

A judge in Waxahachie on Monday ordered the teen held in juvenile custody for 10 days until another hearing in the murder investigation.

The boy also faces court-ordered drug testing and a psychological evaluation.

The boy told investigators he shot his father, Danny Eversole, said Lt. Jason Westmoreland, of the Ellis County Sheriff's Department.

"Apparently, earlier they had an argument about a four-wheeler because the son took it out without his dad's permission," Westmoreland said.

Sheriff's deputies said the boy, a sophomore at Red Oak High School, solicited his friends for help. He offered friends $500 in cash if they helped him carry out a murder plot, investigators said.

A parent alerted authorities, but it was too late to stop it, sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies found a note in the home that led them to Everson's body. Ellis County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Alvin Sims told The Associated Press that the body was recovered at about 3 a.m. Monday.

Investigators found the son at a friend's house a few miles away in Waxahachie.

"He was very forthcoming," Westmoreland said. "He told us where the vehicle was, where the weapon was and was open and honest about it."

The victim's 79-year-old mother, Frances Eversole, said her son was a "great guy" and a "fantastic son."

"It's sad," she said. "It's terrible. This shouldn't have happened at all."

She said her grandson has "ruined his life."
