Red Cross and Fire Departments Busy This Winter

The American Red Cross Disaster Services team has been extra busy this month helping North Texas families affected by fires.

This past week alone, the team has responded to 41 fires, including Monday morning on North Story Road, where Nicole Hayes and her son were able to escape the flames after firefighters pounded on her door.

“We had to grab what we had on. This is basically what we have,” said Hayes.

Hayes was among about 30 people who were displaced by the fire. The Irving fire chief said the cause of that fire is still undetermined.

“You see other people this happens to, but you never think it is you, or you know someone being close to me,” said Hayes.

Like it does with so many people, the Red Cross is now helping her get back on her feet.

So far this month, the Red Cross has helped more than 300 people, which is 100 more than last year at this time.

“The numbers we have hit already are the numbers we normally hit for the entirety of the holiday season,” said T.D. Smyers, CEO of the North Texas Region American Red Cross.
