Rains Benefit Late Spring, Summer Wildflowers

A Texas wildflower expert says intermittent rains throughout the spring should benefit wildflowers that are set to bloom later this month and in early summer.

Damon Waitt, senior director at the University of Texas' Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, said in a news release Tuesday that the wildflower season should improve as wildflowers needing less rainfall traditionally reach their peak.

The center says cool temperatures have encouraged bluebonnets, blackfoot daisies and other early bloomers to stick around longer in locations where there was enough fall rain. But it says the cool weather also delayed the peak of some blooms.

The center says there are good bluebonnet showings in several areas of the state, including along roadways near Brenham, along Highway 290 near Houston and along highways near Austin.
