Public Bus Service Between Galveston, Houston Ends Friday

The Island Express averaged fewer than 10 riders per day

The only public bus transportation service between Galveston and downtown Houston is ending due to low ridership.

Officials with the Island Express say the final day of service will be Friday.

A statement on the Galveston city website cited a lack of riders on the estimated 50-mile one-way route and the area's loss of rural grant funding.

The Island Express averaged fewer than 10 riders per day, with a one-way cost of $9 per passenger. The weekday bus route included stops in Texas City and at the Houston METRO Bay Area Park & Ride facility.

The Island Express bus line started the route last September.
