Prosper Gearing Up for Widening of U.S. 380

TxDOT contractors are preparing to add more lanes of traffic to the increasingly used U.S. Highway 380 through Prosper.

The town is hoping work will be on the road to completion by the time major planned developments are set to break ground.

This week, contractors are working on culvert extensions and storm sewer work. Barriers along the highway’s south shoulder have also been put into place.

The project will widen the increasingly used highway, a popular route between Denton and McKinney, to six lanes from its current four.

“It’s a necessary evil,” said Michael Bulla, Prosper’s capital improvements project manager. “In the end, it’s going to be good to get the extra lanes of traffic out there. Getting it done now is a big plus.”

Bulla said the town is looking to improve its infrastructure capabilities before planned developments break ground on both the Frisco and Prosper side of U.S. 380.

Drivers can expect to see an impact on their commute by this coming winter.

The initial phase will be only 3 1/2 miles, from Custer Road to east of Preston Road.

However, Bulla said, TxDOT is finalizing plans to widen U.S. 380 all the way to the Collin-Denton county border. Work should begin on that phase in mid-2015.
