Power Problems Plague Northwest Fort Worth Neighborhood

Oncor says problem is now fixed but residents disagree

People in the Eagle Ranch neighborhood of northwest Fort Worth say their patience is zapped by power surges that happen several times a week, causing digital clocks to blink, air conditioners to turn off and some electronics to go haywire.

The power has gone out several times a week for months, they say.

Often, the outages last just a few seconds or minutes, but the constant power problems are getting frustrating, the neighbors say.

"It's a huge inconvenience," Tracy Messing said. "You have to reset your computer. And I work from home, so that's especially frustrating."

Oncor Electric Delivery Company, which delivers electricity to more than three million customers in North Texas, said its crews recently fixed the issue.

"We've actually made several different improvements in the recent past to cure this problem," said Oncor spokesman Kris Spears.

But homeowners say the outages continued as recently as Tuesday.

"You didn't fix it here," said resident Steve Gonzales. "I don't know where you fixed it but it didn't happen. It happened yesterday. So if you fixed it, there's something else wrong."

Both sides also disagree about how often it happens.

"We have had nine service interruptions in this neighborhood since January of 2016," the company spokesman said.

Residents say the outages have happened three or four times a week for months.

Resetting clocks is one thing, but the surges are frying some electronics, they say.

Messing's oven stopped working properly after one of the recent outages, she said.

Nothing happens when she presses the "keep warm" button.

"And when you try to set 375 (degrees), for example, the '7' doesn't work," she said.

Her neighbor, Bo Jeffcoat, said he had to replace a 60-inch television, and others have had to buy new computers.

Spears said they can file claims for reimbursement, which are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Jeffcoat, a native of Mississippi who moved to Texas with his wife several years ago, said he is out of energy – in more ways than one.

"I'm tired. I'm tired," he said. "Honestly, we've thought about moving."
