Dallas police said an unspecified disturbance inside the Kalua Discotheque on the 2400 block of West Northwest Highway led to one man being asked to leave.

The man was escorted out of the club by employees and a valet brought him his car. The man then got into the car, police said, put the vehicle in reverse and very quickly backed into a uniformed Dallas police officer working security at the club.

The man then put the car into drive, drove over a curb and hit a second uniformed off-duty officer, critically injuring him and dragging him about 15 feet, police said.

Police said officers opened fire on the vehicle, striking the driver, who crashed. The man, whose name has not yet been released, was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas in an unknown condition.

An "officer down" call was radioed-in and the injured officer, identified by the National Latino Law Enforcement Organization as Sr. Cpl. Edmundo "Ed" Lujan, was also transported to Parkland where he is currently listed in stable condition.

The first officer struck by the driver was not injured.

NLLEO said Lujan is recovering from a dislocated hip, lacerated scalp, broken fibula, broken ankle, broken vertebrae and faces a long recovery. NLLEO is accepting donations for Lujan via a PayPal account (CLICK HERE). The organization said Lujan is a 20-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department who current works in the Financial Crimes Unit.

Kalua CEO Saul Cardona said he's known both officers for years, since the club opened.

"We have a very close relationship with every one of them," he said. "They take care of our business. As well, we take care of them."

Dallas police say they arrested one person involved with striking an officer with a vehicle early Monday morning.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and police have not said what charges the man is expected to face. Dallas police asked that anyone with information about the incident call their Special Investigations Unit at 214-671-3584.
