Police Organization Asks Dallas Mayor Not to Attend Memorial Service

The Dallas Fraternal Order of Police is taking a shot at Mayor Mike Rawlings, asking him to not attend a memorial service for fallen officers.

A strongly worded letter addressed to Rawlings from the union's president, Michael Walton, slams the mayor, saying fallen officers' widows, police retirees and current officers are suffering under his watch.

It evens says that "several widows" have asked that Rawlings not be at the police memorial service due to his "lack of support for public safety."

The letter seems to highlight just how bad relations are between the mayor and some of the city's first responders, and much of it comes down to the pension battle and officer pay.

This comes on the eve of Dallas City Council's vote on the pension bill.

The mayor has been at odds with the unions because of his opposition to a bill in the state legislature that would shore up the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System.

Rawlings has said the bill is not good for Dallas taxpayers and doesn't give the city enough control of the pension board in the future. The mayor also says the same problems could happen if the city doesn't get more control and the city will be unable to afford other important things.

Rawlings's office told NBC 5 that it does not have a response to the letter Tuesday. NBC 5 also reached out to some City Council members and other police organizations but did not get an immediate response.

The Police Memorial Day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17.
