Police: Man Shot Himself in Confrontation With Officers

Company says man was to be laid off

The Dallas County medical examiner ruled Thursday that a man who died Wednesday in a confrontation with police at his employer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police received a call at about 2 p.m. Wednesday that a suicidal man was headed to General Dynamic Ordnance and Tactical Systems at 1200 N. Glenville. The caller told police the man had a gun.

Investigators said officers found Alfred Jones, 50, of Garland, in a pickup truck in the parking lot. General Dynamics said Jones was an employee.

One officer pulled his police cruiser up behind Jones' truck, investigators said. Police said Jones got out of the truck and turned to face the officer when the officer got out of his vehicle. Police said Jones pointed a gun at the officer, who drew his pistol and fired at Jones.

Police said Jones then turned his gun to his head and fired.

Yolanda Moore, director of human resources, said in a statement that Jones was one of 42 employees who were being laid off as of Monday.

She said a total of 320 employees work at the facility, which manufactures munitions components for the U.S. Defense Department.

The Dallas County medical examiner said Thursday that Jones died from a single contact gunshot wound to the head. The medical examiner said Jones did not have any other wounds.
