Police: Homeless Man Fatally Shot During Attack on Security Guard

Shooting occurred at Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center

A private security guard fatally shot a homeless man during an altercation in downtown Fort Worth early Sunday morning, according to Fort Worth police.

According to a police report, Luster Stansberry, 47, attacked Barry Pittman, a Ruiz Protective Services guard, shortly after 6:30 a.m. near the Greyhound bus area at the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center.

Police have not yet determined what led to the attack. At some point during the altercation, Pittman fired his weapon.

Luster was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Pittman was transported to Harris Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Luster's arrest record includes assault, criminal trespass and theft charges.

No charges have been filed against Stansberry.

Fort Worth police spokesman Sgt. Kelly Peel said the Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting.

"Once the medical examiner rules the cause of death, it will become part of the investigation," he said. "The department will consider all of the facts for any potential charges."

Fort Worth Transportation Authority spokesman Joan Hunter said the incident is the first attack to this degree since the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center opened more than 10 years ago.

Ruiz Protective Services is contracted to provide services to the center, which offers access to commuter rail service, regional and national Amtrak train service, and bus, taxi and trolley services, Hunter said.

The facility is monitored by security cameras and has a 24-hour security, she said.

Ruiz Protective Services did not respond to requests for comment.
