Plea Hearing Monday in Denton Football Player Killing

Michael Bryce Underwood will be in a Montague County courtroom Monday for a plea hearing.

Underwood, 17, admitted to accidentally shooting and killing his friend and Denton Guyer senior football player Nathan Maki during a hunting trip last year.

Investigators said Underwood told emergency responders that he and Maki were hunting and he was outside the vehicle taking aim on an animal and discharged his weapon accidentally shooting Maki.

The Montague County sheriff had said that the shooting appeared to be a tragic accident, saying Underwood was emotional and visibly upset when deputies arrived.

Underwood was arrested at the scene for consumption of alcohol by a minor. He posted bond and was released.

The Montague County District Attorney Paige Williams said her office has a policy that all unnatural deaths go before a grand jury.

In October, a grand jury indicted Underwood on a charge of manslaughter, a second-degree felony.
