Basketball Players Learn Lessons En Route to Championship

This will be a summer to remember for some teenagers in Fort Worth.

Students from several middle schools formed a basketball team five months ago, under the leadership of Fort Worth Independent School District alum and former Texas Southern University head football coach Johnnie Cole.

The AAU basketball team for 14 and 15 year olds is called Coleblooded in tribute to Coach Cole. The team consists of players from Fort Worth ISD schools like Meadowbrook, Handley, McClung, Stripling and Jacquet.

The players' goal was to get the AAU National Championship games at ESPN World of Sports in Orlando, Florida, July 5 through 9. Not only did they make it, they won first place in 8th grade National AAU Classic Championship.

"This traveling experience was a first for some of the players, so Coach Cole made sure it was one to remember by winning the championship, sharing personal experiences and providing the players with pertinent historical moments and figures such as MLK's home and church visit in Alabama and the Selma Bridge," Antionette Ford said.
