A 1.8 million square foot furniture store that broke ground last week is already drumming up discussions in a neighboring Plano subdivision.
The Nebraska Furniture Mart is being built in The Colony. The Kings Ridge subdivision sits across the railroad tracks from Plano's boundary with The Colony.
"We simply want to ensure that nothing takes place in the development that could jeopardize the financial investment of the homes," said Bill Kula, a member of the Kings Ridge Homeowners Association.
Kula said his neighbors are pro-economic development and excited for what the development could bring, especially as plans for a neighboring entertainment district are discussed, but said their priority is maintaining the community.
"It's more about light and sound and the aesthetic buffering that we're calling for," he said.
Kula said the homeowners association is working with both Plano and The Colony to ask for help maintain a buffer zone.
But neighbor Jeannie Bart said she is excited to see the NFM project develop.

"I think it's a really positive thing for our whole area," she said.
The Colony resident Danny Miner agreed.
"In the three years I've been there, nothing has coming in," he said. "There have been some places go away. There are a lot of people in The Colony that are hurting for jobs. There are a lot of unemployed people who need to get to work."
The Nebraska Furniture Mart project is projected to add at least 2,000 jobs in the near future.
The store does not officially open until 2015.
