Patterson Proposes State Takeover of Alamo Plaza

Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson has proposed a state takeover of Alamo Plaza. That's the downtown San Antonio square in front of the old mission managed since 2011 by Patterson's office.

However, the city council member whose district includes the mission and square, Diego Bernal, said not so fast.

Bernal told the San Antonio Express-News a 21-member committee to be formed March 6 to study the square could consider the idea during its 18-month review.

Patterson is a candidate in a four-man race for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor. He told the Express-News he supports city efforts to update its 1994 master plan for the plaza.

However, he expects getting a consensus among 21 panel members for what to do with the plaza will be hard to reach.
