Dallas ISD Trustees Send Superintendent ‘Letter of Concern'

Opponents, Supporters of Superintendent Mike Miles Clash Outside Dallas ISD Headquarters

The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees decided Friday evening to keep Superintendent Mike Miles, for now.

The board met Friday for nearly four hours to decide Miles' future with the school district and ultimately voted 7-2 to send Miles a "letter of concern" about his performance.

Later, a motion to ask for Miles to resign in December failed.

Dallas ISD has gone through seven superintendents in the last 20 years. That averages less than three years per person.

Miles, now in his third year at the helm of the district, made his case to keep his job Thursday to NBC 5.

“There will be no 'mission accomplished' sign for us, but we can say we’ve made a lot of growth and we’ve done the hard work that needs to get done, all for the benefit of kids,” Miles said.

Passionate parents gathered Friday outside the Dallas ISD administration building.

Supporters said Miles has improved the district and needs to stay. Opponents, on the other hand, felt the superintendent hasn't met expectations of improving the district and needs to be fired.

"If he goes we've going to start all over again and it's going to disrupt the entire district," said supporter Deborah Bishop, the parent of a student at JL Long Middle School. "So he's got to stay. We've got to keep the momentum going."

"We want to send a strong message that we are sick and tired of his leadership and we want fairness done today," said retired Dallas ISD Supervisor Billy Ray Sanders.

"I think that the public and the students of Dallas ISD deserve to have a real answer about this. Yes or no, and lets move forward one way or the other," said Dallas ISD Board President Miguel Solis.
