This holiday season just became merrier for Operation Kindness with a recent $100,000 donation from Reliant Gives, the charitable arm of Reliant Energy.

"Reliant's generous gift will be used to provide medicine, surgeries, tests and care to hundreds more animals this next year. Our wonderful supporters enjoyed the 'get out the vote' campaign and rallied with events like the voting-with-puppies party and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra pop-up concert. We hope Reliant and their employees know that thanks to them, many lives will be saved and a lot more happiness will happen for pets and the humans who adopt them," said Jim Hanophy, chief executive officer, Operation Kindness.

Operation Kindness is the largest no-kill shelter in North Texas that takes in thousands of cats and dogs and provides them with the proper medical care and assistance to prepare them for a forever home.

The organization’s true operation of kindness during Hurricane Harvey won the public’s heart. When the storm left thousands of animals displaced, Operation Kindness worked hard and quickly to help all those animals.

The Carrollton-based shelter earned the donation after a week of online voting. Two other charities, Casa de Esperanza and Kids' Meals, also earned grants of $20,000 and $10,000, respectively.

Case de Esperanza, in Houston, is a safe space for children suffering from abuse, neglect or the effects of HIV.  Houston's Kids' Meals program delivers approximately 2,700 meals every day to preschool-aged children impacted by hunger and food insecurity. At a cost of about $2 per day, the $10,000 donation from Reliant will go a long way to helping feed 88,000 hungry preschoolers in the Houston area.

Reliant Gives has now donated $590,000 to 15 Texas nonprofits.
