Oncor Giving Away 12,000 Trees

Acorn-bearing trees can grow to 80-feet

A Dallas-based utility will offer 12,000 free oak trees to customers as part of an energy-conservation program.

The Texas A&M Forest Service on Thursday announced the offer by Oncor. The Texas Star bur oak trees are a product of A&M's urban tree development program.

Agency officials say the strategically planted trees are meant to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve storm water management.

Texas Star bur oaks are acorn-bearing trees that are tailored to the climate of Texas and grow to a height of 80 feet. Geneticist Tom Byram says the specific oaks were chosen for the Arbor Day Foundation program because of their durability.

Oncor customers can reserve up to two trees per household.
