Official: Teens Vandalized Houston MLK Statue

Houston authorities are working to repair a Martin Luther King Jr. statue at a downtown park after two teenagers vandalized it.

The Houston Chronicle reported that a city park ranger doing routine checks over the weekend noticed the male teens striking the $120,000 statue with a metal object. Rangers said there were minor damages to the back of the statue, which was unveiled in May.

The statue is in the memorial plaza at MacGregor Park. The 8-foot-tall figure depicts the civil rights leader in a clerical robe.

A Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County spokesman said the damages can be repaired. The authority contributed about $750,000 to the building and maintenance of the plaza.

It's unclear how much it will cost to repair the statue. No arrests have been reported.
