Police said the off-duty DPD officer was walking his dog Wednesday afternoon in the 2200 block of Bennet Avenue when he said a pit bull approached them and attacked. The officer fired his gun at least once, killing the animal.

The owner of the deceased dog admitted his dog was fighting with the officer's dog, but said the terrier-mix was not dangerous.

"We've had the dog six years and never had any issues with it," said the dog's owner, Juan Torres. "Never had any complaints, nothing. I just don't understand, man."

DPD's special investigations unit is looking into the shooting.
