NorthPark Shooting Suspect Was Mall Employee

Police said the suspect in last week's NorthPark Center shooting is a former mall employee.

Victor G. Aliniz, 25, is charged with aggravated assault in the Tuesday attack that sent a NorthPark worker to the hospital after he was shot in the head.

Police said surveillance video shows Aliniz driving around the mall at about 5 a.m. and getting out of his vehicle to shoot several rounds through a mall door and display case on the north side of the mall.

A cleaning crew inside was about 100 yards in the building. The doors of the entrance were shattered, and one bullet hit the victim near his temple.

In a statement, NorthPark officials said they were glad police were able to make a quick arrest.

"We are confident, however, the swift police work sends a strong message about the priority that safety and security have at NorthPark Center for all our visitors, employees and tenants," NorthPark said in the statement.

It is not clear what position Aliniz held at NorthPark. He worked there for a "very short time in mid-2008," according to NorthPark.

Police initially believed the event was a random shooting. Dallas police said they do not believe the victim was targeted by Aliniz. Investigators said they do not know why Aliniz opened fire on the mall.
