The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Waco has imposed a freeze on admitting patients and has scrapped some Fourth of July events because of a norovirus outbreak.
Acting spokesman Bobby Zimmerman says the medical center has been on restricted access since the virus was discovered June 21.
The virus causes stomach and intestinal inflammation and results in vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
Zimmerman tells The Waco Tribune-Herald that the worst appears to be over but at the peak of the outbreak 41 patients showed symptoms, lab tests confirmed two had the illness and one remains actively infected.
He says a barbecue and bingo planned for Friday to mark the Fourth of July are being rescheduled.
The Waco VA center includes psychiatric and nursing home care.
