A Central Texas grand jury has declined to indict two sheriff's deputies involved in a confrontation at a high school that left a student seriously injured.
Bastrop County authorities on Tuesday announced that grand jurors did not return indictments against deputies Randy McMillan and Timothy Stalcup. Also, no charges were recommended against the injured student, Noe Nino De Rivera.
The deputies had responded in November to Cedar Creek High School to break up a fight. Authorities claim Rivera, a bystander, refused to disperse after the fight ended and was belligerent. McMillan shot him with a stun gun and the 17-year-old fell back onto his head. He spent nearly two months in a coma.
Rivera family attorney Adam Loewy called the grand jury proceedings a "sham."
A federal inquiry into the incident continues.
