New Mid-Rise Development to Break Ground in Deep Ellum Before the New Year

One of Dallas' fastest growing neighborhoods is getting a new mixed-use apartment and retail development. The eight-floor mid-rise is expected to break ground in Deep Ellum before the end of the year.

"This is one of the city's hottest neighborhoods," said Adairs Saloon owner Joel Morales. "It wasn't always that way."

Adairs has been a Deep Ellum fixture for the last 35 years. Morales said he's seen the neighborhood change around it.

"There aren't a lot of dive bars or places like this anywhere," Morales said. "Everything's gotta be flashy and pretty and glittery and, like, character and substance. Those types of places don't really exist, or they are few and far between."

There are cranes dotting the Deep Ellum landscape already. The new development by Crescent Communities on Canton Street will demolish old existing buildings next week, and start construction before the end of the year.

It's just the latest change to the neighborhood.

"Foot traffic for the most part, it's good, because that's dollars and that's money being spent," Morales said. "But it's going to get to a breaking point some point in time where you can't really handle the traffic."

Jason Simmons lives and works in Deep Ellum.

"It's just really authentic," said Simmons, who says change was bound to happen.

"Those purists that like it the way it is," Simmons said. "Unfortunately, that isn't reality."
