Naming Rights for Texas Baby Gorilla Fetch $5,000

A bidder has paid $5,000 for the right to name a baby gorilla at a South Texas zoo, but officials aren't yet saying what the name will be.

The Brownsville Herald reported late Saturday night that the naming rights to the nearly 9-month-old gorilla were successfully auctioned off on Friday at the city's Gladys Porter Zoo.

But the newspaper said the gorilla's name "was still being kept under wraps" and that organizers said they weren't sure if the winning bidder wanted anonymity.

Proceeds from the auction go to a new education facility, the South Texas Discovery Center.

It was part of a weekend-long fundraising affair where zoo officials hope to raise between $250,000 and $300,000 so the new center can be finished by next spring.
