NRA 500 a Race, Not a Gun Rally: Gossage

Texas Motor Speedway officials say next weekend's NRA 500 will be a typical NASCAR race -- not a gun rally.

Saturday's Sprint Cup race has drawn national media attention for its new name and title sponsor: the National Rifle Association gun-rights advocacy group.

But speedway president Eddie Gossage tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that "it's another race for us, and it's just like all the others in so many ways."

This isn't the first time the NRA has sponsored a race.

But the gun control debate has heated up since 20 children and six educators were killed Dec. 14 in the Connecticut elementary school shooting. Schools are considering new security measures and lawmakers have proposed some gun-control measures, opposed by gun-rights advocates.
