N. Texas Woman Opens Spa for Breast Cancer Patients

A North Texas woman is opening a salon and spa specifically targeted toward breast cancer patients and survivors.

For Ali Young, Jireh Salon and Kindred Seed in North Richland Hills is a celebration of new beginnings. She is on the heels of a tough journey with breast cancer.

"Cancer is like a disease that is in your face, because the treatment that you go through, it changes you physically and even a bit mentally," Young said.

Young was diagnosed with stage-two breast cancer. She said she found relief and comfort through massage therapy.

"Massage therapy was so important to flush the toxins out of the body so that you could feel a bit better," she said.

She decided to open Jireh Salon and Kindred Seed for cancer patients and survivors. Her mission was to provide a refuge for those who needed a place to relax, without fearing what others would think of their appearance.

Felisha Smith, of Colleyville, is also a breast cancer survivor. She had a double mastectomy and today is cancer-free. She said she remembers feeling insecure about visiting spas during her chemotherapy treatments.

At the opening of Young's spa, Smith said the new facility is ideal.

"You won't have someone looking at you going, 'Oh my gosh, what's wrong with this person?'" Smith said. "They will understand that you're going through therapy, and it's just part of the process, and they are able to provide a service to help you in the healing."

Jireh Salon and Kindred Seed offers wigs, hairpieces, haircuts and coloring, massages and most importantly, support.

"You can be down and not feel good and be nauseous, and that's OK," Young said.

The chemotherapy treatments saved her, but love from her friends and family carried her through, she said.

"It's a blessing, because the Lord really kind of helped get me through this and said, 'You can get through this, and you can get going.'"
