Mystery Headstone Shows Up at Argyle Cemetery

There are 238 headstones that memorialize people at the Graham-Argyle Cemetery, but the most recent to show up there just doesn’t belong.

Within the last month, construction crews working along Country Club Road found a broken gravestone laying near the cemetery and brought it in, figuring it belonged there.

When caretakers began trying to place the stone piece, though, they quickly found it didn’t belong at any of their plots.

In fact, Graham-Argyle Cemetery Association President Scott Norton said he’s never seen any marker matching this one before.

The heavy, light gray stone appears to be broken apart at about the half-way point.

It reads “Sleep with the angels L…” before cutting off on the top line and “You will be in our heart…” on the lower line. It continues with a birth date of May 1, 1987 below, and only the first two letters of the death date, Ju…, leading Norton to believe the person died in June or July of some year.

It’s unclear where the stone could have come from or if someone just dropped it off along the side of the road, but Norton and his fellow association members want to see it back where it belongs.

"What we would like to find is the real owners and carers of this gravestone because someone they love was buried there, and I'm sure they'd like to have the intact stone,” said Norton.

If you know anything about the stone or have any clues that could point them in the right direction, Norton asks that you contact them at www.graham-argylecemetery.org, at the cemetery’s Facebook page or via mail at P.O. Box 573, Argyle, Texas 76226.
