Man Suspected of Using Cloned Card at North Texas ATMs

McKinney police are asking for the public's help identifying a man they believe used a cloned credit card.

Police believe the man went to several ATMs in Arlington, Plano, Dallas and Irving between Sept. 29 and Oct. 3.

Police were alerted to this when they received a call from a man who said there was more than $3,500 missing from his bank accounts, yet none of his cards were gone. They were able to connect the dots and see where the cloned cards were used, and came up with surveillance images of the suspect.

McKinney Police Detective Craig Owens said a card is cloned by using a skimming device, which stores card information. That device is placed somewhere like a gas pump, where an ATM card is used. Then, someone takes that information to clone the card.

Owens said the best ways to protect yourself are to track your card activity and look at your bank accounts.

"The sooner that people catch it, the sooner we are able to follow up and get leads,” said Owens.

Owens said these types of cases are increasing. They have had about four in the past six months.
