Man Shot, Killed in Parking Lot Argument

An Irving man was shot and killed during argument over a parking spot at a busy soccer field in Dallas on Saturday night, police said.

Investigators said the victim, Wilmar Alexander Chavez, 23, was on his way to play soccer at the North Dallas park in the 12900 block of Park Central near the Interstate 635 eastbound service road.

The victim had a wife and 3 year old daughter.  Grieving friends and relatives gathered at his Irving home Sunday.  "It is really sad, and we don't understand," said the victim's uncle Walter Rivas.  "He was a wonderful kid, he was always happy."

Police said another vehicle was angling for the same parking spot as Chavez, who was in a car with other people.

Chavez got out of the car and approached the white sport utility vehicle, and someone inside the SUV shot him at close range, Dallas police said.  Chavez was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Lt. Craig Miller said police will do everything they can to bring the shooter to justice.

"To think that someone's life is lost, and they're not here today because of not being able to get a parking spot prior to a sporting event is really an unfathomable thing to imagine," he said.

Police said they recovered the SUV on Saturday night. Investigators said they want to talk to all the people who were in the vehicle to be certain the shooter was.
