A North Texas man is dead after deputies shot him in a shootout at a rural home.
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said an irate, belligerent man called 911 operators several times, demanding to speak to deputies. He did not give a reason before hanging up.
After deputies arrived around 10:30 p.m. Friday, dispatchers repeatedly directed the man to leave the house peacefully with his hands up. According to a sheriff's statement, the man began threatening to kill the "first cop I see" and refused to disarm.
Finally, the man emerged from the house and charged at deputies, firing his rifle five times. Deputies returned fire, hitting the man in the neck and killing him.
"This incident is a tragedy," said Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler. "Any time we have an officer-involved shooting incident, we request the Texas Rangers to conduct an investigation."
The Texas Rangers have been called to investigate.
