A South Texas man has been sentenced to 18 months in state jail for beating and neglecting his wife's 4-year-old Labrador retriever.
Witnesses told San Antonio police that 32-year-old Joe Anthony Rabago of San Antonio told them he could do whatever he wanted with the pet.
The San Antonio Express-News reports Rabago was supposed to be watching the female dog for his spouse. The pet had to be euthanized about a week after the mid-2012 attack.
Rabago in June pleaded no contest to non-livestock animal cruelty for the beating that left the animal with a broken back and broken ribs. He was sentenced Monday.
The defense sought probation.
