Lake Como Drowing Victim Identified

The Memorial Day Weekend got off to a tragic start after a man drowned in Lake Como in Fort Worth

A 22-year-old man, identified as Adam Wiggins of Fort Worth, took off his shirt and shoes and entered the lake just before 11 a.m., according to fire officials.

Witnesses at the lake said Wiggins swam about 30 to 40 yards from the shore and began to struggle on his way back.

Ken Kennedy said he called the police as soon as he noticed the man go under.

"When you see a kid struggling -- you know he's too far away to go help. I did what I could do, calling 911," he said.

Kennedy also said three people jumped in the water to try to save Wiggins, but it was already too late.

"The lady jumped in, and a couple of other people jumped in, and, you know, by that time, he was under, probably," Kennedy said. "It was actually 10:49 when I called."

Wiggins was pronounced dead after divers retrieved his body from about 10 feet of water. Witnesses said he was found in the spot where they saw him go under.

Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Lt. Kent Worley said police contacted Wiggins father, who came to the lake and identified his son.

Fire officials warned North Texans to be careful around any body of water.
