The man, who was driving a pickup truck, sideswiped another vehicle heading east near the intersection of McKinney Avenue and North Akard Street, authorities said. The truck driver fled the scene, but a witness followed.

Authorities said the truck driver then crashed into a Nissan Juke with four occupants near the intersection of Akard Street and the Woodall Rodgers service road.

Five people from the two crashes were transported to hospitals. Three people in the Juke were listed in critical condition, Sheriff's deputies said.

The driver of truck was injured in the crash, but expected to be OK. Authorities said he will be arrested, but there is no word yet on the charges.

Authorities said they're investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crashes.

North Akard Street was closed until about 5:30 a.m.
