Police said Steven Tutt was behind the wheel of a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche at about 10 p.m. Thursday when he apparently lost control of the pickup and crossed the yard of a home on the 400 block of Seminary Ridge before smashing into one of the bedrooms.

When the pickup came crashing through the home's exterior wall it collided with 42-year-old Jose Reyes and 43-year-old Yesenia Vasquez.

Reyes died from his injuries while Vasquez was hospitalized. Her family expected her to be released from the hospital Friday afternoon.

A man was killed and his wife was injured inside their Mesquite home when a man suspected of driving under the influence came crashing through the wall.

Family and friends attended a vigil at the home Friday evening.

Pablo Reyes doesn't know the family but says he passes by the home everyday.

"It is sad. No one deserves this kind of pain in life," said Pablo Reyes.

Raul Gomez, the family's pastor, talked about how hard it was for Vasquez to deal with the loss of her spouse.

“It was really hard, real hard. Especially when she’s in the hospital dealing with her injuries," Gomez said.

Gomez was there Thursday night after the crash and explained the challenges of trying to rescue Vasquez.

"She got trapped in one of the rooms. We had to call the fire department to come and get her out because she was in the wall. We had to tear some walls down and everything,” Gomez said.

Police say they arrested an 18-year-old man for intoxication manslaughter after he crashed a vehicle into a Mesquite home, killing a man and injuring a woman Thursday night.

Tutt remains jailed on a charge of intoxication manslaughter; jail records did not list an attorney for him. Tutt's passenger, 24-year-old Shabreka Tutt, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.

Neither Steven nor Shabreka were injured in the crash.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
